Using Quotes in Speeches

Purpose
To present evidence
To add validity and authenticity to your points
To support an idea

Guidelines:
Quote only passages whose exact wording is useful foryour purposes.  The quote needs to actually help you prove your point.  Don’t just place one in because it’s required.  Get some mileage out of the quotes you include.

Make sure to explain your quote!!  A quotation is no substitute for analysis – an unexplained quote serves no purpose, unless the quote’s meaning is so straightforward that it needs no further explanation.

All quotations need to be correctly cited to avoid plagiarism.  You must mention who said it.  You might even explain very briefly who this person was/is.  For example, “Albert Einstein, one of the world’s most brilliant scientists and deeply philosophical men, once said…”

Consider song lyrics and poetry lines as quote(s).
